Are US organisations missing the employee engagement trick?

I was hit by an interesting thought yesterday when speaking to David Zinger - an employee engagement expert over in Canada. He mentioned that yesterday was their annual public holiday - ‘Labor Day’ – a day “that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers” (Source: Wikipedia).
